Director of Individual Giving

Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), a Tony Award-winning nonprofit theatre dedicated to the production of contemporary plays and musicals, seeks a Director of Individual Giving to work with the Chief Development Officer.

 

For over fifty years, MTC has been the creative and artistic home for America’s most gifted theatrical artists, producing works of the highest quality by American and international playwrights.  We are strongly committed to producing work that is made by, and tells the stories of, a wide range of voices from all walks of life and to making that work accessible to all audiences including those that have historically lacked access to the arts and cultural sector. MTC produces up to eight plays annually in Broadway’s restored Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on West 47th Street and Off-Broadway at the historic NY City Center complex on West 55th Street.

 

Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, the Director of Individual Giving is a senior member of MTC’s frontline fundraising team, primarily responsible for leading direct fundraising efforts to secure more than $5M in individual annual support. This role focuses on cultivating and soliciting individual gifts through the Patron Program, Artistic Director Circle, and Producing Partners while fostering strong donor relationships. Additionally, the Director will provide leadership and guidance to the Individual Giving team, supporting collaborative efforts to meet and exceed revenue goals.

 

 Job Responsibilities:

  • Lead a portfolio of approximately 150 prospects, independently driving the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship processes.
  • Conduct at least 100 prospect meetings annually, ensuring consistent follow-up, communication, and activity tracking for each donor.
  • Oversee the growth of MTC’s Patron ($3,000+) and Artistic Director Circle ($12,500+) programs, engaging with ~900 donor households annually.
  • Work with Chief Development Officer to expand the Producing Partners program, securing major gifts of $50,000+ through targeted, production-specific campaigns.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and oversight for the Individual Giving team, including the Major Gifts Officer, Individual Giving Manager, and Development Assistant, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and fostering professional growth.
  • Promote positive donor relations by ensuring timely and impactful stewardship across all levels of giving.
  • Develop and execute fundraising strategies to achieve annual goals, including donor acquisition, upgrades, renewals, and benefit fulfillment.
  • Collaborate with team members to create strategies for fundraising events such as MTC’s annual Benefit and Gala.
  • Enhance Moves Management practices, prospecting, and cultivation strategies, with a focus on increasing donor engagement and identifying opportunities for growth.
  • Partner with the Director of Development Operations and Strategy on data analysis, wealth screening, and projections to support targeted fundraising.
  • Collaborate with Special Events staff to design and execute donor cultivation events, including pre-show dinners, receptions, and Opening Nights.
  • Represent MTC at key events, strengthening relationships with trustees, donors, and prospects.

 

Requirements:

The ideal candidate is an accomplished fundraiser with demonstrated success in cultivating major gifts and leading individual giving programs, paired with experience managing and supporting teams.

  • 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in frontline fundraising, including securing 5- and 6-figure commitments.
  • Proven ability to grow individual giving programs and achieve ambitious revenue goals.
  • At least 2 years supervisory experience with a focus on mentoring, goal setting, and team performance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build lasting relationships with donors at all levels.
  • Creativity, strategic thinking, and a results-oriented approach.
  • Proficiency with MS Office and Tessitura (or similar CRM systems) and strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Moves Management and donor cultivation best practices.
  • Experience in the performing arts or cultural sector is preferred but not required.

Reception and Operations Assistant

Reporting to our Director of Production, the Reception and Operations Assistant is situated at the front desk and is the first person to receive guests and visitors to MTC, including actors, directors and other artists working on productions as well as Trustees, guests of senior management and business associates. As the nexus for all operations in the office, they will receive and handle facilities requests. Ordering supplies for the office and speaking with maintenance vendors and scheduling repairs.

Responsibilities and Skills: (including but not limited to):

  • Screens all walk-in inquiries, organizing messenger pick-ups and deliveries.
  • Answers all phone calls to the main desk and directs callers to the proper party or answers questions as required.
  • Works with the Production Department to make sure that the studio bookings are on schedule, and on any needs that may arise.
  • Interfacing with Maintenance and Facilities Vendors.
  • Ordering supplies for the office.
  • Keeping an eye out for any repairs that may need to be completed.
  • Scheduling/hiring ancillary Front Desk staff for after office hours.
  • Handles other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements:

At least three years of relevant experience. As the face of MTC, this person must have a pleasant manner and excellent communication skills, along with excellent problem-solving skills and experience with callers and visitors who may sometimes be demanding.

This is a full time, salaried position paying $46,000 yearly with full benefits package including: group health insurance with options for spousal, family and/or domestic partner coverage, voluntary dental coverage, basic life and long term disability insurance, employer-funded pension, paid time off and optional 401(K) and flex savings plans for healthcare, dependent care and commuting expenses.

THE DRAMA LEAGUE STAGE DIRECTING FELLOWSHIP is a two-year experience for early-career stage directors, supported by an unprecedented $100,000 scholarship prize per recipient ($50,000 per year), up to $10,000 in health care insurance reimbursement ($5,000 per year) from The Drama League. The fellowship will offer a wide range of unparalleled opportunities at Manhattan Theatre Club, the Drama League’s Theater Center in New York City, and many other additional career-building activities.

CAN WE GET TO KNOW YOU?

Assistant Director (AD’s) generally begin work on the first day of rehearsal and will work full-time on that show until its opening night—roughly two months from start to finish, though this varies.  Duties vary widely based on their personal strengths and the director they are paired with, but may include observership, dramaturgy, note-taking, and general rehearsal room support. All AD’s are asked to lead talkbacks after select previews.

MTC often participates in the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation Observership Program. This program allows early and mid-career directors the opportunity to observe the work of master directors and choreographers as they create new productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway and at leading regional theatres. 2024-25 Stage Management Fellowship

Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), a Tony Award-winning nonprofit theatre dedicated to producing innovative theatre of the highest quality by American and international playwrights, with a focus on presenting New York, American, and world premieres, invites individuals from historically underrepresented communities in the theatre workforce to apply for the 2024-25 Stage Management Fellowship. For over 50 years, MTC has been the creative and artistic home for America’s most gifted theatrical artists, producing works of the highest quality by contemporary American and international playwrights. MTC is an anti-racist organization that respects and honors all voices, and upholds the values of community and equity.

The Stage Management Fellowship is a six-month intensive professional development opportunity for early-career professionals belonging to communities underrepresented in the theatre workforce who have theatrical stage management experience and training.  The Fellow will be supervised by MTC’s Production Management team, and primarily will serve as a Production Assistant on three productions during the 2024-25 season: Eureka Day by Jonathan Spector and directed by Anna D. Shapiro; Dakar 2000 by Rajiv Joseph and directed by May Adrales; and, Stephen Sondheim’s Old Friends devised by Cameron Mackintosh with musical staging and direction by Matthew Bourne and choreography by Stephen Mear.

The Fellow’s on-the-job training responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the stage management team from pre-production week through at least opening night
  • Generating show-related paperwork
  • Working with the stage management team to track props, costumes, and scene changes
  • Gaining experience in production management and working in a producing organization when not engaged in rehearsals or performances

The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills, a sharp eye for detail, exceptional organizational skills, and the ability to coordinate and prioritize.  A strong working knowledge of theatrical production procedures and practices and strong computer skills, especially proficiency with Microsoft Office, are required.  Theatrical production experience is also required. Experience working in a union employment environment and familiarity with Actors Equity Association agreements is a plus.  Evening, weekend and early morning hours will be required. Occasional physically demanding work, such as lifting and moving equipment, will be required.

This is a full-time non-exempt position beginning on or around October 15, 2024 and concluding on or around April 8, 2025. Compensation is $660.00 per week with benefits package including: choice between two group health plans with options for spousal, family and/or domestic partner coverage; basic life and long term disability insurance; paid time off; voluntary dental, vision and flex savings plans for healthcare, dependent care and commuting expenses.
