Controller

Manhattan Theatre Club (MTC), a Tony Award–winning nonprofit theatre dedicated to the production of contemporary plays and musicals, seeks a Controller to join its Business Department.

For over fifty years, MTC has been the creative and artistic home for America’s most gifted theatrical artists, producing works of the highest quality by American and international playwrights. We are strongly committed to producing work that is made by, and tells the stories of, a wide range of voices from all walks of life and to making that work accessible to all audiences, including those that have historically lacked access to the arts and cultural sector. MTC produces up to eight plays annually in Broadway’s restored Samuel J. Friedman Theatre on West 47th Street and Off-Broadway at the historic NY City Center complex on West 55th Street.

The Controller plays a key leadership role within the Business Department, overseeing day-to-day accounting operations and ensuring the integrity, accuracy, and timeliness of MTC’s financial reporting. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Controller manages core accounting functions, supervises staff, supports the annual audit and tax filings, and works collaboratively across departments to strengthen internal controls, processes, and financial systems in a complex, fast-paced nonprofit theatre environment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Accounting Operations. Oversees daily accounting activities including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll coordination, and cash receipts. Ensures transactions are recorded accurately and in accordance with nonprofit GAAP.

Financial Close & Reporting. Manages the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes. Reviews balance sheet reconciliations, journal entries, and financial statements to ensure accuracy and consistency. Prepares internal financial reports and analyses for the Director of Finance and senior leadership.

Audit & Compliance. Serves as a primary point of contact for the annual external audit and supports preparation of the Form 990 and other required filings. Ensures compliance with applicable laws, regulations, grant requirements, and internal accounting policies.

Supervision & Team Leadership. Supervises accounting staff within the Business Department, providing guidance, training, and performance management. Fosters a collaborative, detail-oriented, and service-minded team culture.

Process Improvement & Controls. Assists in developing, implementing, and maintaining strong internal controls. Identifies opportunities to improve workflows, documentation, and financial systems to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and transparency.

Cross-Departmental Support. Works closely with colleagues across the organization to provide clear financial guidance, respond to inquiries, and support operational needs, including budgeting and forecasting processes as assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required; CPA or advanced degree a plus.
  • Minimum 5–7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit, performing arts, or similarly complex organization.
  • Strong working knowledge of nonprofit GAAP and financial reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience managing month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Prior experience supervising staff and supporting audits.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills, with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with non-financial colleagues.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting systems; experience with Microsoft Great Plains and Tessitura strongly preferred.

This is a full-time, salaried position with a comprehensive benefits package including group health insurance with options for spousal, family and/or domestic partner coverage, voluntary dental coverage, basic life and long-term disability insurance, employer-funded pension, paid time off, and optional 401(k) and flexible spending plans for healthcare, dependent care, and commuting expenses.
Salary range: $110,000 – $130,000, commensurate with experience.

Individual Giving Manager

Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Individual Giving, the Individual Giving Manager serves as a vital member of MTC’s fundraising team. This position supports efforts to secure over $5 million in annual individual contributions through membership, philanthropic giving, and major gift initiatives. As a donor-facing role, the Individual Giving Manager is primarily responsible for cultivating and stewarding MTC Patrons—individual donors contributing between $3,000 and $25,000 annually.

 

Responsibilities:

 

  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 150 mid-level donor and prospect households, implementing tailored moves management strategies to ensure renewals, upgrades, and continued engagement.

 

  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Individual Giving to ensure donor outreach and prospect engagement efforts across the department are strategic, coordinated, and effective.

 

  • Take the lead in spearheading and owning the individual Giving research process, including identifying and researching major potential major donors, guiding them through the donor pipeline, and assisting with conducting event-related research. Collaborate with the Development Assistant to develop and implement research strategies.

 

  • Lead review meetings with leadership to inform and shape donor engagement efforts, and proactively identify new prospects to contribute to program’s growth.

 

  • Assist the Director of Individual Giving in spearheading the Planned Giving Program, helping to identify consultant and/or marketing partner, and coordinating Society benefits.

 

  • In partnership with the Development Communications Manager, oversee the planning and execution of special fundraising campaigns such as Giving Tuesday and end-of-year solicitations.

 

  • Assist in maintaining and growing a robust Young Patron program that acts as a pipeline for the next generation of MTC supporters.

 

  • Contribute to the growth of the Friends Program by developing and implementing strategies for donor upgrades and new acquisitions.

 

  • Draft letter templates for season welcome mailing and patron renewals and acquisitions

 

  • Represent MTC at special events, including Opening Nights, ADC Events and Salons, Patron Nights, Winter Benefit, Spring Gala, and others as needed.

 

 

Requirements:

  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in fundraising or equivalent sales experience
  • A strong track record of fundraising, including major ($10K+) and mid-level ($5K+) gifts.
  • Familiarity with Tessitura (or a similar CRM)
  • Experience working in a performing arts organization or the cultural sector a plus.
  • A working knowledge of Basecamp, Microsoft Office, the New York City theatre community and non-profit structures a plus.
  • Excellent written, oral, interpersonal and public communication skills.
  • Excellent judgment, time management, organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Some evenings and weekend hours required.

THE DRAMA LEAGUE STAGE DIRECTING FELLOWSHIP is a two-year experience for early-career stage directors, supported by an unprecedented $100,000 scholarship prize per recipient ($50,000 per year), up to $10,000 in health care insurance reimbursement ($5,000 per year) from The Drama League. CAN WE GET TO KNOW YOU?

If you are a director interested in being an Assistant or Associate Director at Manhattan Theatre Club, or working at MTC, you are welcome to submit your resume to directingfellows@mtc-nyc.org.

Assistant Director (AD’s) generally begin work on the first day of rehearsal and will work full-time on that show until its opening night—roughly two months from start to finish, though this varies.  Duties vary widely based on their personal strengths and the director they are paired with, but may include observership, dramaturgy, note-taking, and general rehearsal room support. All AD’s are asked to lead talkbacks after select previews.

MTC often participates in the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation Observership Program. This program allows early and mid-career directors the opportunity to observe the work of master directors and choreographers as they create new productions on Broadway, Off-Broadway and at leading regional theatres.
